Having only thin REST clients and instead keeping all functionality in a server
has many benefits beyond those listed in
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/SQOOP/Sqoop+2 and in Arvind's
comment above. It is easy to invoke from any programming language. It is easier
to debug because all logging and all execution is in one place. There is no
risk of version conflicts between different clients (the only version that
matters is the server's). Auditing (in addition to authentication and
authorization which were already discussed) is much easier. Much less painful
to upgrade in environments where there are multiple clients with different
owners.
