I've synced up to 7. I think there used to be a limit of 12 or so but I think that's no longer the case.
One thing that is important with so many players is that they are similar. Different device types have different timing behavior and that can cause a lot of sync corrections which with this number of players can have an impact on sound. But it think with similar RPis you are somewhat safe.
