I tried a full rescan with the --charset=utf8 startup parameter added as dolodobendan suggested (and verified that LMS was displaying utf8 instead of cp1252 in the info). It was added and was playable without issues as before and it also had a short file name in the data base. So at least for this case the changed character set didn't make a difference.
