I had moved this problem to a pCP thread - where it turned out that your above suggestion was the fix: https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?109404-ANNOUNCE-piCorePlayer-4-0-0&p=932378&viewfull=1#post932378 Enabling swap fixed the problem and my system runs overall much more snappy.
