You are correctly skeptical of my ability to follow instructions. In my
attempt with LMS 8.0.0, I think I did things right. I tried again:
1. Told the NAS to remove LMS 8.0.0 and all its configuration files. It
told me that it did. I rebooted the NAS.
2. Told the NAS to add LMS back and rebooted the NAS (without first
adding editing the SLIMOPTIONS statement). After this reboot, a log file
existed and looked much like the one that I described above, with only
three different lines, with many instances of "Logitech Media Server
died. Restarting."
3. Added "--d_startup" to the SLIMOPTIONS statement, in order to get a
"real" log file, then rebooted the NAS yet again.
3. Looked at the resulting server.log file. It had the same three lines
as last time, differing only in having far more instances of "Logitech
Media Server died. Restarting."

Trying again with 7.9.2, which I earlier couldn't get to work, either:
1. Told the NAS to remove LMS and all of its configuration files.
Without rebooting, I then told it to add LMS 7.9.2. After that change, I
rebooted the NAS.
2. Added "--d_startup" to the SLIMOPTIONS statement and rebooted the
NAS. Before doing so, I peeked at the server.log file, which looked much
like it did with 8.0.0.
3. After this reboot (with 7.9.2, and with the SLIMOPTIONS="--d_startup"
added), the log file was again essentially the same. I noticed that
after this reboot, the file with the SLIMOPTIONS="--d_startup" line
still had that line. I thought that when LMS was actually loaded, this
line was supposed to be reset with a null parameter value. I didn't
always look with my other attempts at loading and unloading LMS and
rebooting, but this was not the first time that I saw
SLIMOPTIONS="--d_startup" after a reboot with an allegedly installed
LMS.

I infer that, despite the fact that my NAS tells me that LMS 8.0.0 (or
7.9.2) is installed, it actually is not. At least not completely enough
for LMS actually to load.

If you have other suggestions, I'm willing to listen. I do appreciate
the suggestions I've received to date.
