OK, it's been several days since I reinstated the %ALBUM*.jpg in Settings/Advanced/Formatting/Artwork, and nothing 'crazy' has happened, so I have no idea what caused the original craziness.
Anyway, thanks to Mike for steering me in the right direction, and for his tireless work on LMS.
