Well as it turned out my SN woes had to do with a Netgear router and
Apple Extreme conflict. By eliminating the Netgear router, and using
the Extreme as the Wifi access point and router SN came up on the SB3
like old times. 

This will teach me a lesson just not to add equipment without
understanding their function better. I wonder if this issue was somehow
giving my Motorola Cable modem signal strength issues that my ISP has
identified during a service call.

Many thanks to the support line folk who stuck with me and figured this
out. They are Saints in my book.
