In my experience, it's exactly the opposite.

Again, oversimplification: it certainly makes no sense for the sites I
run, which have millions of hits a day.

(Not to mention I'm not keen on giving any 3rd party root access to any
machine I would be responsible for... and, yes, Amazon and others can
read your volumes if they wanted to... encrypted media is an illusion
when you're running in a VM...)

Those renting "cloud" space should divulge "oh, yeah, and our provider
could always mount our stuff and look at it and we wouldn't even know"
in their privacy policy.
