Ah, I forgot, I was experimenting with going through US proxies at that time (for other reasons). Perhaps I indeed had one activated when requesting the invitation. But at least right now I'm sure that I have no proxy activated and everything works, so there is at least no geolocation implemented after the initial sign-up.
