The OS on the NAS - which runs the Squeezebox server (so I won't have to keep a PC on at all times) is Linux (I think).
I restarted the NetGear WLAN router and the NAS. After this everything works as normal again. I believe that I made one tiny (but critical) error in setting up the extender. The gadget has a button for automatic config. Sounds too good to be true - right. What happened was it went into some sort of loop trying to synch with a non-existing Xyxxel WLAN router and also put a heavy load on the router.
