You pretty much need an MX resource record (RR) listed to point to your 
mail server. Generally, try to make these point as A records rather than 
CNAME

If you are going to run all your own services, you may want to invest 
some time into getting to know the DNS system in detail so you can set up 
your own domain name server. Bind9 is decent, and dbjdns is a little more 
complex but also worth the time investment to get to know it.
