You failed to state what version of SquirrelMail you're using.  I just
checked SquirrelMail 1.2.12[cvs], and 1.4.1[cvs] and did not find the
string "last update".  I did find "Last Refresh", which in the file is
recorded as:

msgid "Last Refresh"
msgstr "Derni�re mise � jour| "

Exactly as you said it should be. So I'm going to guess that it's a
possible problem with gettext, or PHP 4.3.2.
