We're using the file system here @ Cornell and with approximately 8000
users using SquirrelMail on a daily basis (20,529 created accounts) and to
date I haven't seen any issues. Disk I/O isn't a performance factor and
currently we're only using 52M of disk space.

For me I prefer the file system over the database backend because:
1) It's one less piece of software or maintain, secure, operate, and document
2) It's easier for me to manipulate text files on a disk than whip up
complex SQL queries. It's the perl in me :)

My only concern with the file system is when we end up clustering the
SquirrelMail machines to meet demand (I plan to share the data partition
across the clustered web servers) . Some strange and interesting things
should happen if the load balancer doesn't work like it's supposed to. ;)
