This I can't answer. It's one of the gripes I have with the IMAP server
administrator: a lack of hard numbers.

Each mail server has roughly 8000 accounts.

I have no idea what the load will be on this server until I get it into
production 10/21. However, I can tell you about our current production
machine (Sun E420 w/4G RAM and 4 processors @ 450MHz)

Peak load average: 22 @ around 11:00am
Memory usage: About 2G during peak
Peak response time: about 10-15 seconds for an INBOX of 500 messages (3
minutes or so for a mailbox of 5000 @ peak time)

Keep in mind that filters will bog your machine down A LOT. 500 messages
with no filters can take about 5-10 seconds at my peak load. With 20
filters that time can take up to 30 seconds or more.

If you can implement server side filters, I recommend it highly. We'll be
looking at it this spring once we finish migrating the last stubborn few
off a few old Sun machines.
