Sorry about shouting guess i was just a little frustrated thats all, I had everything working ok a couple of days ago but i was using apache 1.3.something the default squirrel mail install from the ports tree. There was no apache with openssl and php package in the ports so i decided that if i had to custom configure it might as well be apache2. So the imap server was working a couple of days ago now i get the error. Not that any of this helps you i just had to get it off my chest Haha. I have not tied any different clients as i really like BINC (version 1.2.3) have been using it for a log time this is what the log says.
@40000000406a9a9c36df1c8c 773 0 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:] Error initializing Binc IMAP: SSL negotiation failed: Internal SSL error: error:140760FC:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_CLIENT_HELLO:unknown protocol
The reason for using port 993 is because i only have the ssl version of BINC installed that was all i needed at the time for mozzila and outlook clients. I will enable the regular version because what you say makes sense and i read in the squirrel mail docs somewhere that using the regular port will save on server overhead. I am using php4.3.4 so that should not be the problem and am recompiling binc right now with and without ssl hope there is a setting somewhere to allow a regular local login and an ssl remote login.

I am using freebsd 4.9 stable apache 2.0.0.49 with openssl module and
php4 module with squirrel mail version 1.4.2. Also i use BINC imap
server with ssl on port 993 and postfix 2.0.18 tls on port 25 my
problem arises when i try to login it gives me this error. It does not
matter weather or not i use a secure connection (https) or an unsecure
connection i get the same error

*ERROR:*
*ERROR : Connection dropped by imap-server*

There is no need for shouting. The error message isn't displayed allcaps in SquirrelMail.

It looks like you didn't configure your imap server correct. Did you tried
other imap clients? Did you look at your im ap server log files?

I'm also wondering why you are using port 993. There is no need for secure
connections if SquirrelMail and BINC imap resists on the same host.

You forgot to mention your PHP version. If you insist on using secure
connection over port 993 then the minimal required PHP version is 4.3.0.
