I may have to emerge sync.  When I emerge -p squirrelmail it gives me 1.4.3
(no a).  But I notice on the gentoo.org site that 1.4.3a is the current
release.

Are you sure about that exact version?

1.4.3a is the current version in Portage. There were particular issues
with the standard 1.4.3 if I recall correctly.
