Note- you can also specify in the <HEAD> section a different location
other than the server root for a file named something other than
favicon.ico like this:

<LINK REL="shortcut icon"
HREF="http://domain.com/subdirectory/specific.ico";
TYPE="image/x-icon">

I don't know which browsers wouldn't recognize it. Konqueror, FireFox
under Linux and Safari for OSX all do.
