Sorry about that.  I replied thinking it came fromthe mailing list 
without looking at the To: field.  Has been a long day with Squirrelmail 
1.4.3a.  Oh,  the debugger I installed was debugger-0.99.11.

Dovecot IMAP is configured to run via Xinetd.  It is working because
my windows machine receives messages via imap from that server.
The machine is a fresh install of LFS-6.0:
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ and selected packages from :
http://lfs.crash404.com/blfs/news.html
The system is running kerenl 2.6.9
dovecot-0.99.11
apache 2.0.52
php-5.0.2

Now I get this page of errors:
