thanks to those who replied to my query.
it seems that better telnet no longer supports ssh.
i did manage to get a data fellows F-secure ssh trial version
which works very well on this old mac.
i do not know what will happen after 30 days
but i am willing to pay for the complete version.
so i will check out their website.
i have a copy of nifty telnet, and use it by preference to login to the
local account, but
i wasn't aware that it supported ssh.
i will check my version again, but it may be an older one with no ssh support.
