IMHO the problem is the server (since other clients aren't
working too). You can startup a debug server, i.e.:
sshd -p 1023 -d
Then you can connect to that server via
ssh localhost -p 1023
launched in a different X-Term (or virtual console or whatever you
are useing ;-) ) The server dumps out some debug messages. You
may use "strace" to get more information about the calls the
server does, i.e.:
strace sshd -p 1023 -d
