If you set DISPLAY manually, you will most likely end up losing the X
forwarding property. Let ssh do it automagically, don't touch what it
does, for it does things right. :)

Bingo, you've just asked X to send stuff directly to you and broken
the ssh X forwarding.

You want your DISPLAY to be `hostname`:n.0 where n is larger than
any X head on the server, and defaults to 10 or larger on 1.2.27.
