ssh-agent not working

I have a full install of Mandrake linux 7.0 (almost the same as redhat 6.2)
with medium security options.  I can use ssh, and connect with other ssh
systems, but I can't seem to get the ssh-agent to launch for
authentication.  Instead I get a text only prompt for my password.  I have
PAM installed, and the config file supplied with ssh was installed, but
nothing seems to happen.  Anyone have any suggestions?
