Ah, wow, that's an interesting conundrum. I guess I can assume that it
doesn't do EBCDIC -> ASCII xlation either, eh? :P

Is it 'legal' within the bounds of ssh to do character translations? I
assume that it is not, because ssh has no knowledge of the data it is
passing.

You'd have to write a pre-encryption data wrapper to do xlation.
