Is there a way to use SSH as a VPN tunnel? What I'd like to be able to
do is establish a SSH connection to a server on the other side of a
firewall (I already have this part working), then create a "route" on my
local system that would send certain traffic (based on netmask) over the
SSH connection to the remote system.

I'm assuming I'd need some kind of routing software running on both
(local and remote) systems, working together with the TCP forwarding
capability of SSH.

Any and all help, including pointers to FAQs, would be greatly
appreciated.
