I would have to completely disagree. 

The tcp-on-tcp argument is interesting, but in practise all traffic flows
well over ssh-ppp. Hardly any noticeable performance or latency decrease.
The only exception is SMB which has significally lowered performance. All
other protocols work well. Or, at least this is my experience for 3
different setup over three different links.

And it was certainly easier to setup for me than, say, IPSEC. The only
downside is that since it is connection oriented you have to have a script
to reopen the connection if it dies for whatever reason. But that can be
done pretty easily.

There are at least three sites giving detailed instructions for doing this.
(Sorry I don't have the links.)

I'm not saying it would be as robust as IPSEC or any other full-blown VPN,
but it's lightweight and it works. So no reason to scare people away from
it.
