SSH vs VPN

We are currently trying to identify which one would be a better solution for
us.  We would like to provide connectivity to clients offsite to our
heterogeneous environment.  We do have a firewall to contend with and that's
one reason why we are looking at VPN, but I have to admit I don't know much
of anything else.

Could someone please tell me what would be the advantages of using one over
the other, or what they have found to be a harmonious solution?  Thanks.
