depends on your/their needs. we use both. most people don't need
full access to the network and can deal with a single entry point
via SSH and then ssh from that machine to any other machine theyh ave
access to. some people need more then what plain ol ssh can provide
and they use vpn. I for one use ssh over vpn. i have a vpn system
running and then i ssh over it to systems in the network, much
better for my needs because i need to get to different parts of
our wan via various methods (https/http/imaps/smtp/telnet/ftp/etc)
setting up ssh for all that would be difficult, so i use vpn
instead. of course i have a static ip and a dedicated machine
to connect in from on my home network on a high bandwidth
connection so i don't have to worry about dynamic ips or whatever
which may cause problems with some vpn stuff. I much prefer
ssh over vpn for people other then myself for security reasons,
but ssh doesn't provide solutions for everyone here. i have
a friend that tunnels through ssh from his OS X machine
in boston to a server he has on my network and he is always
having problems with that tunnel(doesn't stay up) i don't
know if it is SSH related, or maybe his connection is bad
(my end works perfectly)..or maybe OS X's ssh port is
not perfect yet ..
hope this helps :)
