A  few quick comments on this thread.

You will notice that the documentation in the doc directory is all about the
'leaf' functions.  There are areas that are definitly still being changed by
me :-).  I have big plans for the PKCS7 and X509v3 extension stuff.

Yes, I agree.  I need to update the stuff in the apps directory, I just never
seem too....

This is part of the reason I've been doing perl5 stuff.  I am doing only the
calls that are needed.  I also have visions of giving the different functions
ratting on how much you should or should not be using them :-).

Oh yes, for full function lists, look at util/libeay.num and util/ssleay.num.
These files are used when generating .def files for Win16/Win32 DLLs.
They are all the exported functions.

I agree, the demo area needs to get larger and I need to stop changing things
:-).

I'll have a list of areas that are still going to change a bit in the 0.9.0
release notes.
