I bought a Taig Lathe (and all the tooling available, including the milling
attachment) 26 years ago. I was 13 at the time and it took forever to save up!.
I have made countless parts and can highly recommend it to anyone who needs a no
frills, low cost setup. On the Taig, working to precision tolerances depends on
sharp tools and good tool geometry, as this lathe is not as stiff as it's larger
cousins. However, I recently turned a batch of four pistons to a diameter of
.220" and found that I could easily (see above) hold the dimension to a couple of
ten thousandths. For what it's worth, I also have an Atlas 6" and find that I
still use the Taig when I'm machining smaller parts. That said, if I had to
choose today, I'd strongly consider the Sherline due to the tremendous number of
accessories (tooling) available for it.
