When you log to a "MACHINE" log, the log file is associated with the
nickname of the machine from which the request originated. So, if you log
something locally, like "STAF local log log machine logname test message
hello level info", this will not be associated with machine "local", as
that is not the local machine's nickname. Under normal circumstances, it
is unlikely you would ever get log files associated with a machine
nickname called "local". I'm assuming that your first example is actually
generating some useful output, but the second is not. If that isn't true,
disregard the above.
Now, would it be better if (in your second example) STAF took the "local"
value passed to the MACHINE option and automatically substituted the local
machine's nickname? I'm not sure it would be better, but it's certainly
something that could be done. Feel free to open a feature (or provide a
patch) if that is something you'd like implemented.
