As documented in sections "2.4 Variables" and "4.2 Machine Nickname" in
the STAF User's Guide, the STAF/Config/MachineNickname is the nickname for
your machine. It defaults to the same value as the STAF/Config/Machine
variable unless overridden using the MACHINENICKNAME configuration setting
in the STAF.cfg file.
The machine nickname value primarily affects the data stored by services
such as the Log and Monitor services, which store data based on the
machine from which it came by using the STAF/Config/MachineNickname system
variable as part of the directory path that STAF uses when creating logs
and monitor data. By allowing the STAF/Config/MachineNickname system
variable to be overridden, it allows you to better manage your data. The
machine nickname is not used to communicate with other systems and does
not have any effect on trust.
The {STAF/Config/MachineNickname} will never be set to "local" unless you
set it to local in your STAF.cfg file using the MACHINENICKNAME setting
(which is probably not what you want to do). If your hostname for a
machine is "machine1.mycompany.com", you could choose to set the machine
nickname to "machine1" using the MACHINENICKNAME setting in the STAF.cfg
file. If so, then you would specify machine1 for the MACHINE option in
your LOG QUERY request when querying a machine log.

[staf-users] LOG Query command's Machine parameter
Hello,
What is the difference between
staf local LOG Query Machine {STAF/Config/MachineNickname} LogName
STAX_Job_1_User
and
staf local LOG Query Machine local LogName STAX_Job_1_User
Why do they produce different logs?
