The old 7.6.1 Finder was not multi-threaded, so when it was in the
background, it used no CPU cycles.  The 9.1 Finder is heavily
multi-threaded, and thus sucks up CPU time even when it isn't the foremost
window.  Also, SETI is particularly sensitive to background processes
slowing it down.
