SM 4000MT w/Newer G3 300 upgrade/160 MB RAM
This is an unscientific test but it is an actual experience. I have been
running the SETI program screensaver for a while, I have over 100 cycles on
my SM. I wanted to camper speed with my wife's Powerbook G4Ti so I
downloaded the program and ran it on her machine for a couple cycles. My SM
with OS 7.6.1 ran a cycle at about 24 to 26 hours. The PBG4Ti did it in the
22 to 24 hour range, generally only about a 10% speed increase over the SM!
Doesn't make the G4 seem so fast. Makes me want to keep running my SM
forever.
Then I upgraded my SM OS from 7.6.1 to OS 9.1 and boy are the cycles slower.
It now takes at least 30 hours (one was 37 hours) to run a cycle. Since it
is the same SETI software I have to assume it is OS 9,1 slowing things down.
But I thought things were supposed to be faster under later OSs since there
was less 68k code left.
Now in day to day use on Appleworks, Word, Netscape and Quicken I do not
notice a useable speed loss (although there is definitely no speed gain).
Windows definitely open faster under 7.6.1 but not necessarily operations
within the programs.
Anyway, I wonder why everyone is in such a hurry to upgrade OSs when it
looks to me like the older OSs are faster and certainly 7.6.1 was as stable
as any Mac OS I am aware of. The main reason I will continue to run OS 9.1
is for my wife's personal compatibility between computers, that kind of over
rides other considerations.
