What version of the OS are you running?   What software have you 
installed recently?   Have you tried booting with extensions off 
(hold the shift key down during booting)   When was the last time you 
backed up your data?   I would suggest doing this before things get 
worse.  Have you tried running "Disk First Aid" and examine your hard 
drive?  The only time I had this problem, I ended up having to 
reformat my main hard drive because it had become so badly corrupted. 
The sorry state of affairs that lead to it was a conflict that had 
caused multiple crashes, one of which corrupted the HD.
