Oddly, I just put a 10g Bigfoot in the same machine the other day. And the
problem wasn't the fit, but the facty that the SM only supports 1 device
per IDE cable/slot. You must abandon the CD to have a cable for the second
drive.
Take off the outer cover, unplug the CD drive cables, marking the audio
cable so it'll be put back the same way some day and draw the CD unit out
the front. This allows easy access to the two empty 5.25 wide bays beneath.
The 10g drive I have is only an inch tall so there's no trouble in fitting
it in but I'd put two temp screws in the slots to hold the unit a bit
forward while I connect the cables. When the cables are firmly seated,
mount the drive permanently and the installation is complete.
If you want a CD, you can use the old CD after you transfer the contents of
the old drive to the new one. (I'd partition the new drive into two so I
could keep the old contents in the first partition and use the second
partition as a "second drive.")
Or, you could get a new SCSI CD, there are cheap CDRWs out there and get an
internal SCSI cable with enough connectors to pick up the new extra unit.
Make sure any IDE units are jumpered for either single or master, as I
understand it. Instruction should come with the drive or are available from
the manufacturer's website.
Good luck,
Bob
