I should add about the 5.25 Bigfoot drive installation:
The original Starmax drive is narrower, but that doesn't mean you can't use
the Bigfoot.
The front cover doesn't have to come off; the Cd unit will slid forward and
out once the cables and screws are removed. The lower plastic bay covers can
then be released and pushed out from the inside. The new drive is inserted
from the front, the cables connected, and screwed in to hold it at one of the
4 levels available. (The top level is probably preferred to leave the most
room for the next installation.)
The next installation could a CD or another drive. And if you have transfered
the contents of the original to a partition on the new drive, however you
can't escape Apple's crippling of the SM's expansion capacity by have the 2
IDE slots each read only 1 device.
The IDE drives are cheap; the SCSI expensive, hence the dilemma.
You can buy a Sonnet ULTRA ATA66 PCI card that accomodates 4 additional IDE
drives (not CD's) by fooling the SM into thinking they are SCSI devices. But
remember that once formatted and used this way, the drives cannot be used as
normal IDE drives and must be reformatted (losing all data) to go back to
being straight IDE.
Even the brightest 11 year old should be cautioned about being careful and
thinking ahead. Some connectors have locks that aren't easily seen and some
audio connectors can be reversed with bad consequenses. You and he (she)
should go to the Bigfoot site and get the specs and manual for that new drive.
The potential for frustration can be high, but the feeling of success in
hearing the boing and having a new bogger drive can be worth it,
Again our best and good luck
