I recently put OS9.1 on my APS 604-200. I completely
reformatted the hard drive with the Standard Apple software and
installed the new apple driver and so forth. I was previously
running 8.5.1 with FWB formatting and driver . (for some reason I
could not get 8.6 to install on this machine)

WOW! is it a LOT FASTER and more stable. And I'm only
running with 32 megs of RAM. (I recently bought another 64 Meg of
RAM from velocity upgrades but I haven't had a chance to put it in
yet.) This machine has a too good a disk drive but it is now
working a lot better. I cannot believe that it runs this much better
with only 32 meg ram.

It would also be a good thing to run Diskwarrior and Plus
optimizer---these are GREAT programs. I have not done it on this
machine yet but I just did it on my Cube and zowie!

In the past, HP has stopped support of its products when
production of that product ceases. I have an 11-year old HP IIp
laserprinter that has a postscript card and localtalk so I use
Laserwriter 8---the PPD file for the printer comes from the Adobe web
site. I have been keeping my old IIvx in service to run my old HP
scanner because I thought the driver would not work on newer
systems----well it turns out that one version of the driver runs on
9.1 so I'm in great shape. (By the way--I had a colleague who
bought an HP scanner in the spring of '95. In the fall he wanted to
convert his PC systems to Windows '95. HP would not support it
because they stopped production of the scanner in the summer---so his
HP scanner had an effective life span of 6 months.
OH---that's why I stopped buying HP products. All that
famous support that I got for my reverse polish notation programmable
calculator in the '70s is now just a distant memory. The MBAs have
supplanted the HP way.
