Sometime around the release of OS 7.6 or OS 8.0 Apple made a BUNCH of
internal changes to the SCSI device manager, and this hosed all the disc
repair software people pretty good, worst though was Norton. If you ran an
older version of Norton with the new Apple SCSI stuff it would trash your
drive most thoroughly. Norton came up with a temporary fix you could
download free, followed by two "version updates" that you had to pay for.
Versions in question were I think 3, 3.5, and 4.0. And this is only
partially related to the HFS vs HFS+ issues that forced buying the new
versions.
