ROM (read-only memory) is used to control the operation of various
devices in the computer. For example, Apple G3 desktop, towers and
blue-and-white G3 all have a rom dimm replaceable chip on the motherboard by
the RAM memory chips. In the Voodoo3 video card I installed, the ROM comes
preset for Windows computers. This can be changed however, with the proper
software (a sort of Mac "driver", but not an extension) which can be
downloaded for free (www.mac3dfx.com -look down the right side column. This
is sponsored by WWW.XLR8YOURMAC.COM as the manufacturer "went under" -
3dfx). Instructions come with the software, but it may take a couple tries
to get it right. Driver extensions are also included.
Other devices may also use this flashing technique but the video card
is the only one I know of. These are excellent video cards for the Starmax-
if you buy one that already has Mac rom you will probably have to pay a
little extra. I got mine for $44 incl shipping from auction which was a good
price.
