There was an error in my response about VRAm upgrades I realized later- my
Starmax came w/ a 1 mb vram chip in a socket (some- 5000's?- came w/ larger
ones I think) and it needs to be removed and REPLACED w/ a 2 mb or 4 mb chip
to upgrade the video (max of 4). Surprised no one called me on it yet.
I was confusing it with my rev A iMac which had 2 mb vram on the motherboard
and more vram can be ADDED to this, either a 2 or 4 mb chip for a possible
max of 6 (the later iMacs didn't have this upgradeability feature but the G3
beige does). If youre putting in a video card, this is irrelevant as it has
it's own vram, so dont bother.
Anyway, while 1 mb VRAM is barely sufficient, 2 mb VRAM may be enough to
satisfy most people who aren't big gamers, and both the 2 and 4 mb chips are
cheap-[ $7 for 2 mb, $16 for 4 mb http://eshop.macsales.com -(you could also
check chipmerchant.com)] according to a note I made at one time. With what
other upgrade can you double or more than double your capability so cheaply?
