I had similar problems with Netscape. I think the Mac version of Netscape is somehow flawed. I've had difficulty running it on 3 of the 7 Macs I work on, including my Starmax.
Run Internet Explorer (free download available). It's almost identical to Netscape and doesn't cause any of these problems. I think that's why Apple stopped shipping Netscape with their OS and substituted Explorer. But that's just my opinion.
