I suggest you take out the old battery and take it to Radio Shack (some have
them, mine didnt) or a battery specialty shop and have them test it before
you spend $12 or so on a new one for a nonworking computer (maybe). If you
get a new one, after installing it, press the CUDA switch and hold down
about 10 sec.- this is a very small button just to the rear of the memory
module slots. When I replaced my old (but still working) battery mine
wouldnt start up til I did the CUDA press.
The battery can be hard to find if you dont know where to look too; it's
sort of behind the CD drive, on the motherboard, in my 3000 tower, and a
little tricky to connect and disconnect because of the location. You might
want to unscrew the CD drive mounting screws a little and slide it forward
if you find it too difficult to access.

I would think he would have tried the power button on the front of the CPU
and not only the keyboard button.

If the battery is ok, and pressing the CUDA switch does nothing, it would
probably be best to either sell the parts from it or buy another one and
keep this one for spare parts.
