Tis a pity - I was hoping that this problem was dealt with by now (and with
an OS like Linux certainly expected it to have been sorted a long time ago).

If HFS+ support fails to work as desired, there is an alternative set of
programs to virtually mount an HFS+ partition, change to and list
directories, and copy files over onto a regular location. Because this is a
virtual mount, it cannot be seen by any other applications, but you can at
least copy files over without needing to reboot and move files into a shared
HFS partition or floppy or anything.

I think they go under the names of hpmount, hpls, hpcopy and hpcd.
