I had a similar problem. Three possible solutions:
1) If you have more than one hard drive in your Max, make sure they all
have the same disk driver version.
2) Increase the Finder's RAM allocation. Use ResEdit or the freeware app
Finder Fixer. 
3) Use FinderPop to reveal apps that run in the background and increase
their RAM allocation too.
