In that case it sounds more like an IDE Master/Slave issue. Having a 
compatible CD reader only effects if a disk will mount on the desktop 
(which of course happens only after the OS and Finder have loaded) and 
be readable.

That may be, but again I doubt it could cause your problem with 
booting. The CD burner isn't looking for an extension before the OS can 
even boot. The various SCSI and IDE "pathways" (i.e. buses) must first 
be "clear" (no conflicts) before the OS will load. That's why 
unplugging the IDE cable frees up the bus and un-hangs the OS so that 
it can boot.

This should work if all the bits are correctly installed.

Examine the burner. Proly should be set to Master. Also know that not 
all IDE devices will be compatible with all IDE buses. I've got a 3GB 
Maxtor HD, for example, that won't work in any IDE Mac.
