I'm seriously considering buying VueScan. Free updates for life, a realistic usage policy (4 computers), works with 9 and X, tons of super-geek advanced features with a clean interface and oh yeah, it resurrected a Perfection 636S under 9.1 when none of the available Epson software would work. In fact, in testing some other old scanners VueScan liked the Epson the best--quite fast.
You do need serious RAM for it however. I temporarily faked it with VM on a 80MB PB3400c with mixed results.
