The coffee percolator noise you describe may indicate a problem with your
hard drive. If I were you I would backup my data as soon as possible. Like
jr suggested you should check your disk. Norton Disk Doctor will test the
hard drive (media scan) or if you have nothing else you can use Drive Setup
(part of Mac OS). Run drive setup, select your drive from the list and
select Test Disk from the Functions menu. This may take a long time to run.
Backup your data first.

If testing fails or if the test seems to stall and you hear your percolator
sound your hard drive is likely bad and will have to be replaced.
