It could be either. It sounds most likely to be the hard drive, which I have had
happen to me in the past. Get your important data backed up ASAP. New hard drives
are really cheap right now and there's no excuse to lose vital data, especially with
the ease of copying on a Mac.

I did however want to mention that having fixed and rebuilt a lot of computers, it
could just be dust. This can cause crashes at any random moment and I've seen a lot
of people think that computer is on it's last leg, when all it needs is a little
cleaning. A computer depending not just on the environment, but also how long you
have been using it and how clean the air is, etc., will accumulate a lot of dust
inside, especially the fans. I realize out of the three, this is the least likely,
but since your opening the case to fix it anyways take a weak handheld(Too powerful
and you'll damage something) and vacuum the insides especially the fan and
motherboard(You can also buy special small vacuums for computers, but I've never had a
problem using normal handhelds and crevice attachments.) I forget the exact %, but I
know that the leading reason for computers breaking is dust and bugs.

Good Luck,

Mars
