LA Bob, Driving an ethernet card is sometimes rather specific. My 5000 came with a Zynx ethernet card. The drivers were on the original StarMax disk, but by searching, they might be found. I don't know what came with your 4000, but you might find the proper drivers on your disk, or look at the card and then search the internet for proper drivers.
I can't help with configuration at the moment since I'm away from my machine at the moment. Naturally you have checked hardware things like the card being seated, the cable is good, etc. Software at the router allowing the WAN connection... Actually, OS 8.6 was very good to me. My 9.1 was not an iMac disk. Separate purchase.
