I haven't run one on a StarMax, but I did on my PowerBook G3 "Wallstreet"
with a Firewire PCMCIA Card. The problem you will run into in that the FW
port will not provide power to the iPod (at least I don't think it will).
This problem is minor - it may cause some headaches when you want to upgrade
the iPod software (because that requires that you unplug then plug back in
the iPod). It worked fine for me in my setup when I plugged the iPod back
into the wall. I also did this under OS X, not 9.x. If you get a powered
hub, or if you route your iPod through another FW device (like an external
FW drive) that can provide power to the FW port, I'll doubt you'll notice
anything. You won't be able to run iTunes 3, which is necessary to use the
iTunes Music Store. I'm also not sure what version is required to support
Audible.com audio books - it may have been during one of the 2.x upgrades.
I also don't think you'll be able to use mp4's, I believe that requires
iTunes 3, which is OS X-only. I'm sure this is what they mean by "full
functionality."

Sorry for this being so longwinded. I don't see why it won't work for you
if all you want to do is transfer mp3s to your iPod via iTunes 2.x.

Just a note - my experience is on the old iPod form factor. The new iPod
has different firmware and may very well not run on 9.x, I don't know.
